Close above 875 with low volume...

With two minutes until the close stocks jumped higher in a mostly sideways session Friday. The energy issues finished with decent gains. Banks and home-builders closed lower.

So what's our next move on our S&P position(s)?

We will slowly increase our percentage long by 10% next week provided volume picks up
.

Our target to add was a close above 875 on the SPX (S&P cash). We failed to close above 875 on Wednesday and Thursday. Today we closed at 877 with a two minute push into the close. When price increases and volume slows this often signals a short term top.

Hence, the reason for caution before we add (see video).

SPY 75.64 45% 83.21 on half and mental on rest 50%. 87.89 With two minutes until the close we finished above 875 on the S&P at 877.52. We will increase our percentage long by another 10% early next week. My concern is the lack of volume (see video.)
AAPL 112.64 5% 118.49 on 50% and 121.66 on rest. 127.48 Do not initiate a new trade. Looking for a pullback to 120 if you missed this one.

TBT 47.91 5% 45.47 50.17 This is our short bond play. Looking for it potentially reach 55 which is resistance. Bonds continue to look like they want to go lower.

Increased Price w/ Increased Volume...

Tomorrow we will start adding to our SPY position. Technically, 95 is the next resistance with 110 being the top end of the range.

How and when we will get there would be a guess.

Volume picked up nicely today which is what we were waiting on.

Should we sell in May and go away? No, but let's be disciplined to lock in profit so when we short this market we have the necessary capital to do so.

Getting To Scratch...

The S&P is slowly clawing its way back to break even. All this way from the March 9th lows and the Buy & Hold crowd is still not quite to break even. Anyway, tomorrow ADP Employment comes out well before the open.

CSCO will announce tomorrow as well. Continue to add to your SPY position (hopefully on weakness) so you are at 65% by the end of the week.

The Charts And Nothing But The Charts...

For those who trade off the news the charts have proved yet again that the reaction to the news is more important than the news itself.

Continue to move up your stops per my table below. As the market strengthens you will notice more positions in the table for two (2) reasons:
  1. With market strength typically more leading stocks and ETF's show up in more sectors.

  2. It's also important not to chase extended stocks or ETF's and therefore for the new subscribers we are always searching for new positions that are just breaking out.
We will short this market in '09. You can count on it.

Over and out!

Techs Lead The Market Down w/ Volume...

The results are out on the stress test and the Government's test revealed that 10 financial institutions have been ordered to raise $74 billion over the next seven months.

So now what?

If we break 900 over the next week then we want to make sure we hold the trend line just below 890. If we bouce off the trend line we will add. If we break it, we will lighten up to lock in profit.

Tomorrow should be an interesting day with employment numbers and the market's reaction to the stress test.

This Week We've Added to the S&P, Metals and Energy...

The S&P and the Dow are still showing technical signs of strength while the NASDAQ looks to be stalling.

Investor sentiment is high but not quite an extreme yet.

When investment sentiment reaches an extreme the market typically has hit a temporary top. It works the same when everyone throws in the towel, we then begin to buy based on technical confirmation.

You guys know by now that these markets are based on emotions and nothing but emotions. The news (good or bad) in itself is meaningless. It's the reaction (emotion) to the news that counts.

Thankfully those emotions (reactions) plot themselves on a chart to give us our edge.

Always remember that the fear of missing out is often greater than the fear of loss.

Hence, the reason markets become overbought and oversold due to the average investor buying at the top and selling at the bottom.

But not us: We forget the noise and watch the charts!

Lower Volume Selling...

The NASDAQ actually had the best day of the three for the first time in a week even though it closed again below the 200 day moving average.

The SPY and SSO are still above the lower trend line in our channel as depicted in today's video.

Is this the start of a move down or just another soft volume drop in a "V" shaped bottom? The answer is that it's too early to tell.

A couple more down days with heavy volume might get us to sit up in our seat to lock in some profit.

F (Ford) down in after-hours may increase selling pressure in the morning.

Protecting Some Profit...

A little bounce today on light volume. But yesterday we broke the trend line on the SPY (see video.)

We continue to keep our stops in place on 25% of our S&P positions. I do not want to use stops on our entire position because I believe based on what I see technically that the March lows will hold. However, I remain confident that we will be able to buy back in at lower levels.

How much lower would be a guess.

Hence, the reason for not stopping the entire position at this time.

Additionally we may hedge soon with some shorts on the NASDAQ using the QID and the S&P using the SDS. These short plays are listed in the table below.

Option expiration tomorrow Friday should bring volatility.

Bounce or Break...

The market sank today even though we saw better than expected economic data. This is just one more reason why we make final decisions based on technicals vs. fundamentals.

We can see by looking at the SPY chart the market has not made up its mind whether to bounce or break. No movement to speak of in the last three days.

By using hard stops we did take some profit today on USO (Oil) and on 25% of our SPY position.

We are keeping some powder dry while simultaneously rolling into stocks and ETF's that look more probable.

Check out the video for support levels on the SPY at 88, 85, 83, and 80. We will continue to probe the short side as a hedge against our larger SPY position and also as an attempt to capture some short term profits.

Cut your losses short and quick and let your profits flow.

Bounce Is The Answer...

It appears that the answer to Friday's question was answered today with the word 'bounce,' with the banks as the biggest culprit. Even though prices jumped the volume did not.

The NASDAQ barely climbed above the 200 MA again today. 95 on the SPY is the next level of resistance provided we hold 88.

We will be able to buy the SPY and the SSO cheaper than today's close. However at this time I see 110 and higher in the cards before the years out. It is too early to say we'll end up at those numbers but I do feel we'll hit them at some point.

So if you are new and in heavy cash, you need to get exposed.

Our "Chart of the Day" is KO (see video.)

Flat With Mixed Volume...

After the close HP's (HPQ) profit and sales took a hit. I like the stock if it holds 34 this week. And if it does, you will most likely see it in the table.

Continue to keep some powder dry and move your stops according to the data in the table. The VIX is very low which is one of our indicators for some potential selling ahead.

Keeping an eye on the steel stocks.

Profit Taking w/ Volume...

Up huge in the morning with end-of-day flush. And with strong volume. We've been here many times in the last 9 weeks and the market quickly bounces back. Maybe this time we get the rest we've been looking for. Highly probable considering the long weekend.

As always keep some powder dry and follow my pattern recognition on the shorts.

Lower Price on Lower Volume...

The NASDAQ was the biggest mover to the downside today. The volume was light which is a positive on a down day.

Volume could be even lighter tomorrow Friday with traders cutting out early for the three-day weekend.

Nice move in our metal positions: SLV, GLD and GDX.

We may bounce here again on the SPY (see video). However, Im very confident we will eventually break our first level of support at 88.

The Buck...

The Dollar tanked this week and therefore our commodity positions moved higher than the equity markets. Even though the dollar will most likely bounce next week we will continue to pick individual stocks (large cap) and ETF's that work well with a weaker buck.

Investor sentiment remains very high (contrarian indicator). This along with our pattern recognition using technical analysis has confirmed our decision to keep a significant amount of powder dry.

The Dow and the S&P are still negative so far in '09 for those Kool-Aid drinkers in the 'Buy&Hold' camp.

The "Chart of the Day" is TBT.

The Market Focuses On The Good...

The market opened lower with geo-political concerns and weak housing data. Consumer confidence kicked in and the market reversed its early losses and took off later in the trading day.

An upgrade for AAPL (Apple, Inc.) helped the NASDAQ close above the 200 day moving average once again.

The NASDAQ was the best performer with the heaviest volume, which is a good sign.

New buys today, if you are heavy in cash, are MCD, AAPL and SMH.

Maintain no less than 30% cash in your portfolio.

The "Chart of the Day" is AAPL.

Bond Yields (six month highs) Take Down The Equities...

The equity market continues to trade sideways in a tighter range with each passing week. If we close lower tomorrow I believe based on what I see technically, we will soon break our first support level that we charted on the SPY at roughly 88 (see video.)

If this is the case we will tighten up our stops and hedge some of our long positions w/ various shorts.

Bond yields jumped sharply and pushed equities down. Our TBT (short bonds) position was a major benefactor.

Call me directly at (858)414-1970 if any of you have questions about placing a short order.

The "Chart of the Day" is GE (short).

Commodities Continue To Lead...

We are seeing nice profits in our various commodity ETF's such as SLV (Silver), GLD (Gold) and USO (Oil). We continue to move stops to lock in profit at these lofty levels.

A late surge today on lighter volume was not enough to break the market out of its four week base. We continue to be cautious at these levels and we also continue to beat the market while sitting w/ a nice chunk of cash.

The "Chart of the Day" is QCOM (short).
