Global Economic Data Sends The Market To New Highs Again...

The Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index numbers started the market higher today. I'm a little suspect of today's volume.

Existing subscribers should maintain 15% to 20% cash.

If you are new or heavy in cash you should get to 60% long using the SPY (50% during the week) and the two new trades (10%).

Even though the market is stretched – it could stretch further. You might experience some short term pain. However, you'll be sitting in 40% cash at these levels which will ease the pain.

Jobs...

You have probably heard throughout the day that the Labor Departments report showed U.S. unemployment fell in July to 9.4% even as the economy lost another 247,000 jobs, the smallest decline in nearly a year.

The market has not had a significant pause in 4 weeks.

The game plan has not changed. Continue to let the winners run and maintain cash for a potential pullback to 950 on the S&P.

We will take some chips off the table on the SPY if it hits 110 before any significant pullback. Today's close was 101.20.

Initiate the new trades only if you have more than 20% cash and are already heavily weighted in the major indices. For now our goal is to pick stocks or ETF's that are breaking out of bases.

Low Volume...

Low volume is acceptable when stocks sell off a little like today. However this entire four week rally has really been on low volume. Hence, the reason we will tighten the stops (see table below) on 25% of our position in the SPY and the QQQQ's.

If you get stopped out you should have roughly 65% remaining exposure to the market.

Profit Taking...

For the past several weeks stocks have rallied into the close. Today just the opposite occurred with 15 minutes prior to the bell.

We are looking for the SPY to pull in and hold 95 which is our most recent breakout level.

Short term I think this market has more gas, possibly much more gas. I also believe that it is highly probable that the March lows will be taken out within the next 16 months.

Check out the chart in the video.

More Gas...

Yesterday I mentioned that the market has more gas in it and today proved it. No need to chase it here. We have plenty exposure to participate on the upside and enough cash to be protected on the downside.

I've added a one word category today called "trend." This will be helpful to those who use the M48 to manage their 401K's.

The trend has been up since March 12th.

Because you can't short in your 401K, the signal will be either "long" or "cash."

Today's video will be the last for this week but expect to get an e-mail from me immediately should something out of the ordinary happen.

And remember, you can ALWAYS get hold of me on my cell at (858)414-1970 should you have any questions in regards to the video and/or numbers in the table below. I am here to serve YOU and there's no such thing as a stupid question. Learning is part of the process.

If you are new to the M48 timing service and are sitting in 100% cash, you can buy 40% with the SPY.

China Leads The Way Down w/ Increased Volume...

Asia lead the profit taking today that hit the world markets in equities and commodities as the dollar and bonds rallied.

We were stopped out of GDX (Gold Miners). Our other small positions such as RTN, BAC, and CVX are still above stop prices.

Move your stop again on BAC.

I don't think this is the beginning of a the big move down – Not yet.

You can blame it on global economic worries and consumer confidence, but I'll just say that Mr. Market was looking for a reason to pullback. If this is the beginning of a major move down or trend change we will adjust accordingly. For now the trend is still long.

Stocks Rise On Higher Volume...

China started us down in the morning, but the bigger news on Wednesday was crude.

The government reported an unexpected drop in crude oil inventories, sending oil prices up significantly. This helped our CVX position, which is featured as my "Chart of The Day."

On another trading note: On Friday I will supply all of you with user name and password to the option "trading room" at Heritage West (where my commodity license is) where we collect premium on the selling of out of the money calls and puts on various commodities.

You'll be able to log in on a daily basis to monitor the various positions. As traders, you will not be required to make decisions or place the trades if you find that this strategy in something you would be interested in. If you're in San Diego, I can meet you at the commodity office to give you a closer look if you so decide.

This is what I do with my managed clients. In short, a high percentage of individuals buying options lose money. We take the other side of that trade.

I believe you will find the returns to be eye opening.

Stocks Jump To New Highs For '09...

Stocks, commodities and bonds rallied on increased volume (option expiration helped) after Bernanke declares economy is on the recovery.

Existing home sales fanned the flames. Banks still are not lending and job losses continue to increase.

We may add UNH and KO next week. Continue to maintain 40% cash. However, If you just got in you should maintain 65% cash.

Big Week For Numbers...

Crude inventories, new home sales, personal spending, initial claims and GDP are all due this week. The market has sold off towards the close both today and Monday.

Technically I see more upside potential of 7% (target 1,100 S&P) to 17% (target 1,200 S&P) before a major trend change.

However, I believe the market will grow very tired if we get to 1,050.

Today we closed at 1,028.

Therefore, if you are a new subscriber and sitting in 100% cash, you can invest 35% by purchasing the SPY (S&P 500 ETF) as the market may stretch more as noted above.

Existing subscribers should stick with 60% to 65% long positions.

In looking for new buys, we are searching for stocks or ETFs coming out of bases or pulling into recent breakout areas and bouncing. Volume is very important.

Profit Taking On Day Nine...

Expected profit taking today after eight days up.

The markets have moved minimally since last Friday's close. We will continue to ride the trend with the SPY and Q's until the trend changes.

Although the trend remains technically stretched, it is not stretched to the max. The max (based on probabilities) on the SPY is 110 to 120.

We will do some selling if we get there.

Some additional reasons for caution moving forward:
  • Creative accounting with toxic asset values

  • Low volume rally

  • Credit deflation

  • Rising savings rate (consumers are not spending)

  • Huge insider selling

  • Big Brother intervention

  • Record bank failures in '09

August Is In The Books...

U.S. stocks came off their lows as China's recent declines spark more uncertainty. Material and energy stocks took the biggest hit today.

100 is decent support on the SPY. We closed today at 102.46.

What to do now?
  • Existing subscribers should maintain 35% to 40% cash.

  • New subscribers with 100% cash should get to a total of 35% invested using the SPY with a little bit of nibbling off the new trades.
